Schizandra chinensis also exerts a very expressed adaptogenous effect. Thus, for example, it is an effective remedy for combating oxygenous deficiency. At the same time it prevents oxygenous toxicosis. Research has shown that Schizandra drugs lessen the platform of lungs engaged in hemorrhages when placing animals into an altitude chamber with rarified atmospheric air, equal to the ascent to a height of 10 thousand meters. Therefore, Schizandra chinensis can find practical application in prophylactics of Alpine diseases and other pathologic manifestations, connected with insufficiency of oxygen in the inhaled air.

Experimental research and clinical observations have confirmed findings concerning the stimulating and tonic effects of Schizandra chinensis on the organism of people. It exerts a favourable influence on mental and muscular efficiencies of man. Preparations made from their seeds turned out to be most effective. Then—preparations from berries and rind; less effective were tinctures from roots and stems. As a rule, the rise in efficiency takes place “mildly” without excitation.

In the case of subacidity of the gastric contents, treatment is conducted with the juice of the berries of the Schizandra chinensis. Such treatment promotes a faster lessening and even disappearance of pains and other disorders, normalizes the tonus and the contractile functions of the stomach.

In cases of gastritis, proceeding with superacidity of gastric juice, the powder from Schizandra seeds, taken during a period of three to four weeks, exerted a favourable effect.

In the case of subacidity of the gastric contents, treatment is conducted with the juice of the berries of the Schizandra chinensis. Such treatment promotes a faster lessening and even disappearance of pains and other disorders, normalizes the tonus and the contractile functions of the stomach. The tincture of the Schizandra chinensis has a marked chologogic effect. This makes it possible to use it, parallel with other chologogic remedies, in cases of cholecystitis and other disturbances of the function of the gall-bladder.

At the time when there were still no sulfa drugs and antibiotics the Schizandra chinensis proved itself to be rather good in treating bacterial dysentery in children.

The Schizandra tincture is also prescribed in treating hypotension.

When stocking berries of the Schizandra, whole clusters of ripe ones should be taken off the plant. They are first of all a little bit air-dried, then the drying is continued at a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees. When picking, storing and processing its berries, easily oxidized (metallic) ware should not be used; violation of this rule may lead to poisoning.

A particularly valuable property is the condition of non-specific heightened resistibility of the organism to unfavourable factors of the environment, for instance, to supercooling, overheating, oxygenous deficiency and others. This so-called adaptogenous effect is found in all preparations made from the golden root, in the same degree as in plants of the Aralia group (Ginseng, Eleutherococcus or others).
