An important property of Eleutherococcus is its favourable influence on the firmness of the organism towards a number of pathogenic influences. This property permits us to consider Eleutherococcus drugs to belong to a group of remedies of the adaptogenous effect, that is, remedies conducive to the formation of qualities of adaptation to a wide range of unfavourable factors. Thus, it has been experimentally shown on animals that a prophylactic use of Eleutherococcus lessens inflammatory reactions caused by burns or frostbite, prevents the development of radial disease, increases stability towards the angular acceleration in a centrifuge etc. Experiments on animals have shown that the preliminary use of Eleutherococcus noticeably decreases the “acclimatization” of transplanted tumoral cells. In animals in which tumors have already been transplanted, Eleutherococcus drugs decrease the possibility of developing tumor metastases (“bringing” the tumor into other tissues). The adaptogenous effect of Eleutherococcus stipulates not only the firmness of tissues towards tumoral cells. The firmness of healthy tissues of an organism to the unfavourable influence of those substances which are now used in chemotherapy of tumors is also strengthened. Moreover, their own antitumorous activity is not weakened.

Eleutherococcus exerts a pronounced stimulating effect. The tincture and extract from its roots considerably raise both mental and physical efficiencies, at the same time not giving rise to excitement. Just as in the case of Ginseng, Eleutherococcus drugs, if taken repeatedly, exert a general tonic effect. Today Eleutherococcus is recommended principally as a stimulant of muscular and mental efficiency, and also as an auxiliary medicament for patients recovering from protracted, serious illnesses.

Introduction of Eleutherococcus into the complex of preoperative medication of patients is conducive to a faster recovery of the albuminous composition of plasma (liquid part) of blood in the post-operative period.

Thus the expediency to extensively use Ginseng as a remedy to prevent diseases, received experimental confirmation. Ginseng exerts a favourable effect on some types of impotence, mainly functional, that is, those that are determined by nervous mechanisms. Ginseng preparations stipulate still other practically significant effects. For instance, they accelerate the healing of wounds. There is available data confirming the fact that Ginseng exerts a more or less favourable effect on diabetes mellitus. This sometimes makes it possible to lessen the doses of conventional remedies used to treat this illness. Drugs from Ginseng are now successfully used to prepare patients for serious surgical operations, and also during a period of recovery after protracted, exhaustive illnesses.

A distinctive regulating effect of Ginseng on blood pressure is registered, that is, in cases of arterial hypotension, it is capable of somewhat raising pressure, and in cases of hypertension—to lower it. Both these effects are expressed rather feebly and have no practical meaning.
